The past year was evidence of the technical revolution that android has brought to the mobile operating system.

So if you are an amateur in the geek world and wandering what is an android?  Well it is a mobile operating system that uses modified version of Linux Kernel.

Initially it was developed by Android Inc. which was later purchased by IT behemoth Google.  Google is revolutionizing the mobile operating system by android. Google’s android application has got the approval of the tech experts and some amazing and important devices are running using Google android.Some of the most prominent mobile devices that are using android system are HTC , ( Hero and Tattoo), Motorola. Google provides more than a search engine experience and accompanied by HTC’s super cool touch user interface (or ‘sense’ user interface).  You can browse through all your contacts and features from Gmail, Google calendar and even Google maps. Google and HTC clearly give importance to the social media and so popular social media sites such as Flicker, Facebook, Orkut, and Twitter are just a keypad away.

Tatoo works wonderfully to give you that superb android experience though the processor is not that fast. This small drawback is very well compensated by its reasonable price tag which is about Rs.17000 (app.) which is at least half the price of Apple iPhone. Google also planning to launch it’s own self-branded mobile device in collaboration with HTC.

They are planning to name it ‘Nexus’ which will have the capability to run multiple applications. The approximate price is going to be Rs.24500 which is again very reasonable. Though iPhone is now have a challenging competitor, it still has better features such as music quality which android devices need to focus on. Tech experts verdict is that android is much better than the tried and tested Symbian operating system.

One more device which needs to be mentioned is Motorola Droid (with a stylish slide-out keyboard) which is getting good feedback everywhere. Sony Erriscons’s Xperia X10 is worth mentioning due to its superb OLED screen. They are priced at higher range of 32000-40000.

Some of the android features which needs improvement are its PC to phone sync service and lack of devices supporting all android applications(on the three versions 1.5, 1.6 and 2.1).Barring these minute kinks android is all set to become the most desired smartphone platform in the coming years.
