Sony Vaio X: Damp Squib!

Sony has always received acclaim for its collection of uniquely designed laptops and netbooks. It latest collection is Sony Vaio X.

Features

The device looks like a portable laptop mainly for its screen which is only 11.1 inches. The hardware is definitely upgraded when compared to the standard notebooks. The Vaio X is powered by the Atom Z540 processor (1.86GHz) built around an Intel US15W chipset. This processor is definitely more powerful than its previous versions like the N270. The netook also has 2GB of DDR2 RAM and 64 GB SSD. The hard drive is definitely more than enough for basic computer use and the office applications. However, you can always buy the 128GB variant. The onboard Intel GMA 500 chip takes care of the graphics part and the resolutions is set to 1366×768 – the norm in present day netbooks.

The device is equipped with high end connectivity features too such as Gigabit Ethernet, Wi – Fi and Bluetooth. There are two USB ports, one VGA port and a common port for headphone and microphone. There is also a SD card reader and a memory stick reader too. The LAN port is collapsed in this model and the port needs to be folded out for the RJ 45 clip. This is due to the overall slimness of the Vaio X. The netbook is equipped with Windows 7 Home Premium which is rare but a welcome addition. The bundled features include Vaio Media Plus, Media Gallery, Vaio Movie Story, Adobe Reader 9.0, Roxio Easy Media Creator, and Adobe Premier Elements.

Performance

The netbook is brilliant for some common applications like email, internet surfing, chatting, VoIP etc. The price of the Vaio X is actually double than the standard netbooks but it was expected as it came from the stable of Sony. But the price is not really justifiable as the hard drive space is very low and the processor is definitely not the most powerful. The VGA port was also not necessary and instead a HDMI port would have been more beneficial.

The most disappointing aspect of the netbook is the battery. The battery works for only 3.5 hrs with medium load. In conclusion, it can be said that in terms of performance the netbook only fares a shade better than its contemporaries.
