After serving AT&T & KDDI, Pantech has now announced the availability of its another Android-powered phone. Known as Vega (IM-A650S), the newest smartphone Vega will be thrown on the carriers of SK Telecom, Korea.

The company also claims that Vega will be the lightest Android phone, being 4g lighter than the Samsung Vibrant, which weighs just 118g (with battery).

Pantech Vega runs Android 2.1 Eclair version powered by 1GHz Snapdragon processor and is built-in with a 3.7-inch AMOLED display. The smartphone also comes subsumed with an internal memory of 500MB and external memory of 8GB. The device is attuned with Flash payment system and Mobile payment system called T-cash. Users can choose from a variety of colors such as White, Black, Gold Brown and Pink.

The new GSM phone also comes built-in with a 5-mp camera that has Auto Focus. The camera allows 720p HD video recording. There is also an in-built video player, which allows users to enjoy their favorite videos therein. The Java-enabled phone also touts to offer superb connectivity options such as Bluetooth, GPRS and makes web browsing extremely fun.

Pantech suffered profit losses during its launch of feature phones when Apple iPhone hit the market at the same time. But, the Q2 brought good news for the Korean manufacturer as the profit margin raised to 7 percent. Owing to this, Pantech decided to launch sixteen smartphones by the end of next year. Most of these yet-to-be-launched phones would run on Android. It has also been confirmed by Park Byeong-Yeop, Pantech’s Vice Chairman that it will team up with Microsoft for the launch of Windows Phone 7, but it hasn’t been decided so far.

Pantech has set a target sale of 500K Vega smartphones only in Korea and will expand its sale overseas as well. In the United States, Vega will be launched on the waves of AT&T or Verizon Wireless. However, nothing has been finalized as yet. It is probable that Vega will have to undergo some modifications before its launch in the United States.

Pantech has been trying to make a place in the Korean market dominated predominantly by Apple and Samsung. So, it won’t be wrong to consider the Vega as Pantech’s ‘Battle Cry’to survive the tough competition from Apple and Samsung.
