LG Introduces Optimus 3D

By on February 17, 2011

LG has recently unveiled its first 3D smartphone, christened LG Optimus 3D, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the glasses-free 3D screens is that the viewer must be present at the right spot to view the 3D effect. While glasses-free 3D televisions have failed to meet the expectations of consumers, the smaller displays of mobile devices could be easily tilted at the desired angle to view the three-dimensional images.

Although Sharp has already produced the world’s first glasses-free 3D smartphone, the new LG 3D smartphone is touted to offer slightly better features at a comparatively lower price.

LG Optimus 3D flaunts a 4.3-inch capacitive multi touch display with 480×800 pixels resolution. The illusion of depth is created by the glasses-free ‘3D parallax barrier screen’ technology. Users can capture 3D videos with the built-in dual cameras of the phone and stream them to 3D capable HDTVs. A dedicated YouTube 3D channel app preloaded on the smartphone will enable users to upload 3D contents created with LG Optimus 3D to the social networking site.

LG Optimus 3D is an Android-based smartphone. A 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP4 CPU will manage its processing function. A button, located at the side of the LG Optimus 3D handset, would toggle between 3D and 2D views. The 3D smartphone will be shipped with three preloaded games developed by Gameloft – Let’s Golf 2, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline and Near Orbit Vanguard Alliances.

The smartphone features dual 5-megapixel cameras with auto focus, LED flash and HD video recorder. Music player and FM radio are present on LG Optimus 3D. The browser of the device supports PC-like web browsing with the aid of Adobe Flash. Social networking is facilitated through the preloaded Twitter, Facebook and MySpace apps.

Multimedia contents stored in LG Optimus 3D could be streamed to DLNA certified devices without the aid of wires. The upcoming 3D capable phone of the Optimus family also features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm audio jack, HDMI and USB ports. It supports memory expansion through SD memory card slot. The built-in A-GPS antenna supports navigation and location based services. The smartphone will run on quad band GSM and dual band UMTS networks.
