Gone are the days when the 3D experience was confined to the theatres. The 3D HDTVs, 3D monitors and many more have brought the 3D experience to the corners of our room.

Future prospective is such that we will soon have a 3D-enabled Internet that will be made possible through WebGL standard that brings plugin-free 3D graphics to Internet.

Expected to be introduced in the later part of this year, the cross-platform WebGL will be developed by Khronos Group that says the WebGL group is to be contributed by browser vendors like Google (Chrome), Opera, Mozilla (Firefox) and Apple (Safari). Well, if you are wondering as to where in all these does AMD fit, so the answer is the OpenGL ES2.0 driver developed by AMD.

To begin with, the OpenGL ES creates a flexible yet powerful interface between graphics acceleration & software whereby the desktop OpenGL subsets that it has. Also, OpenGL ES comprises of profiles for not only fixed-point systems, but also floating-point systems. It also includes EGL specification so as to bind portably to windowing systems that are native. The rest of this article deals with the latter type i.e. floating-point systems tagged as OpenGL ES2.0.

OpenGL ES2.0 will help developers create 3D content that could be given to the open-source Internet browser users faster. This will help create a browser experience that is more application-like. OpenGL ES2.0 enables the software developers so that they can use workstations or desktop PCs in place of embedded systems for creating applications for portable devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Such applications will be centered on OpenGL ES2.0.  Developers can also port software apps from PCs to handhelds via the common programming environment offered by OpenGL ES. In this case, the device is not taken into consideration.

AMD has emerged as one of the giants in the industry to have met its standards. AMD is also among the ones, which have successfully mastered the nitty-gritty’s regarding GPU acceleration. Foreseeing the intensely visual avatar of computing that will soon show its face to us, AMD has well guessed that such a situation will require 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional media apps at large extent.

AMD has also given us innovative technological functionalities such as OpenGL ES2.0 and Fusion APUs that aims at delivering the ideal platform for developing both online platform and virtual platform on PCs for immersive experiences.

It is expected that ATI Catalyst 10.7Beta, to be launched soon, will support OpenGL ES2.0 driver. However, no words on price and availability have been divulged so far.
