Google releases Chrome web browser for Linux and Mac.
Google, on Tuesday, announced the release of a stable Chrome web browser for Mac and Linux users. The Mac version of the browser is fully featured, faster and extensible.
It can incorporate a large number of extensions from the online gallery.
All of the extensions on Google Chrome for Mac can be classified based on their performance as browser actions, page actions or content scripts. Browser action extensions, like Google Mail checker are page independent.
Page action extensions like RSS Subscription are page dependent while content scripts like Google Translate interact with the page. Moreover, users can develop their own extensions with the help of web technologies such as Javascript, HTML and CSS (cascading style sheets).
Google Chrome for Mac, like the original, supports an easy yet powerful bookmark management feature. The bookmark manager allows adding, deleting and saving bookmarks in folders. Bookmarks can even be imported or exported from other locations. The Mac version also supports synchronizing of bookmarks, browser preferences and themes across various computers.
The information is stored online in a Google account. Browser preferences include various settings for the home page, web content, start up and page zoom. The browser, unlike safari, has a full screen mode. This mode can be toggled using the keys “Command + Shift + F”.
The new Mac version is also rich in HTML5 features. GeoLocation API (Application programming interface), App Cache, web sockets and file drag and drop features are incorporated in HTML5.
GeoLocation API is employed by Google Maps application to determine the current location of a device. This location is displayed by Google Maps when users click the “MyLocation” button. The file drag and drop feature is akin to gmail, where users could drag and drop attachments.
Chrome for Mac has a better performance than other browsers like firefox and safari. It has a faster javascript engine and requires lesser storage space. Chrome also supports private browsing, unlike safari. This is handled by the privacy section of the browser preferences. Though chrome does not currently support a flash player plugin, it will be available soon. The new chrome browser for Mac is downloadable at www.google.com/chrome.
