Digital Ultrazoom Cameras – Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 and Nikon COOLPIX P90
By pullanikkat on March 15, 2010
In the arena of digital cameras, Sony and Nikon are two world leaders competing each other with innovative techno filled cameras. Sony has launched the ultrazoom camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 with a phenomenal 20x optical zoom to make capturing easier and attractive for zoom lovers. The competitive product in the target segment, the COOLPIX P90 from Nikon is also an ultrazoom camera but with an optical zoom of 24x.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is specially designed considering people who love to do wildlife photography. The camera features almost all the specialisations of the H series from Sony.
The camera has a hinge screen but not foldable and supports stereo audio recording. The microphone is placed at the top of the camera. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 also carries a jog dial which helps in manual control of the photo shoot. The image stabilizing feature in the DSC-HX1 is reasonably good and shows its efficiency well up to 8x to 10x which makes the 20x optical zoom effective and controlled.
Sony is always into innovative ideas and this camera too features some, like face and smile recognition system. This allows shooting photos depending on the intensity of smile. The product supports HDMI connectivity and uses memory stick as the storage format and the product is priced around Rs.30000.
The Nikon COOLPIX P90 has a firm handgrip and high quality buttons like any other Nikon camera. The screen design is very similar to that of DSC-HX1 from Sony allows only vertical movement. To balance the weight of the product, lithium ion batteries are used in the camera. Nikon COOLPIX P90 has a jog dial but unlike DSC-HX1 cannot be used for manual control. Grainy images are never an output of this Nikon camera as it is capable of controlling the range through ISO sensitivity feature.
The product also allows the user to set custom settings and even to change the aspect ratio. The image stabilization at maximum zoom is stable enough and the zoom is less noisy. The overall features makes this product to be competitive enough with other similar products in the segment from Sony and Canon.
