Both the brands have created a benchmark in their respective segments and are introducing various smartphones with new technology and features. Design
RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360
BlackBerry Curve 9360 gives a refreshing look with a thin chassis. It is 0.43 inches thick which makes it very compact. With a glossy exterior of plastic, it has some elements of gunmetal bezel. It is lightweight and easy to handle.
With a TFT display of 2.44 inches, it has a high resolution with a pixel count of 480×360. The integration of the resolution and the size produces 246 ppi that makes the text very visible and gives fine details. The crispy colors enhance the appearance of the screen with a deep color tone. It gives an excellent brightness output and nice viewing angles.
The BlackBerry buttons and an optical track pad are located below the display. The trackpad gives an easy navigation. The buttons are little stiff.
This handset uses a distinguishable keyboard. But the buttons are small in size. Typing is little difficult as compared to Bold 9900. At times, you need to press a key again and again to register. It is an average keyboard but requires some time to get a grasp of it.
The volume rocker, headset jack of 3.5mm, microUSB port, right convenience key and lock button are located at both the sides of the phone. The rear has a 5MP camera with LED flash and the speakerphone notch is located in the center. If you take off the rear cover, it gives you access to 1000 mAh battery, SIM card and microSD card.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G
It is little thicker than its competitors. This smartphone has an impressive design with a glossy plastic exterior.
The LCD display is 4 inches and gives perfect colors with nice viewing angles. It has a high resolution of 480×854 which covers the fine details. The brightness output given by the phone is average.
It has a PlayStation fashioned gaming pad. The Playstation buttons and directional pad are responsive but you have to adjust the dual sticks which are touch sensitive.
The rear has a 5MP camera with a LED flash. There is a camera in the front too. It also comprises of 1500 mAh battery, SIM card and microSD card .
Interface & Functionality
RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360
With a 800MHz processor and RAM of 512MB, Curve 9360 is very responsive.It makes navigation easy across the homescreen and facilitates a smooth web browsing.
If you are familiar with OS 6, this phone is easy to handle as it runs BlackBerry OS 7 which is easy to master. This handset gives a nice email experience. You receive the messages quickly and it also saves the battery. It would have been great if Blackberry would have incorporated features such as threaded conversation. You only need to set the email address with the password.
There is an application ‘Documents To Go’ which helps you in making and editing MS Office files. Apart from the BlackBerry apps loaded by default, other apps are Slacker Radio, Twitter, Facebook and Amazon MP3 Store.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G
It has a powerful processor of 1GHz and a RAM of 512MB. It is responsive in handling the standard and advanced functions.
This phone uses the Android interface of Sony Ericsson UX. The visuals are very eye-catchy. You can play games like Crash Bandicoot, Star Battalion, Asphalt 6, The Sims3 etc. Its gaming pad gives an excellent experience.
Camera
RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360
It has a 5MP camera and a LED flash but lacks auto-focus. It cannot capture very close shots. The digital noise is a part of the indoor shots. The LED flash gives adequate amount of light to the shot.
It captures the video with a resolution of 640×480. The audio recording is clear and you can capture 29 frames in a second.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G
It can capture 720 p video with a resolution of 640×480. Though the audio recording is clear but it lacks in capturing details. The 5MP camera has auto-focus and features geo-tagging. Details are not clear in the indoor shots.
Multimedia
RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360
The music player of the handset functions well with crisp tones and good audio quality. The handset provides a storage of 2GB with an additional 32GB from the microSD card.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G
The music player in this phone provides crisp and clear audio sound. It supports DivX and plays a perfect video with 1280×720 resolution.
Internet and Connectivity
RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360
Curve 9360 has improved in terms of web browsing. The complex websites take no time in loading. It gives a good internet speed with responsive navigational controls. Other features include 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G
The phone is 4G but the data speed is not very different than the 3G devices. Other features include a bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and GPS.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9360 is available at Rs 19,900 while the cost of Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G starts from Rs 29,000.
