Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Super Zoom Camera Review
Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a 12 megapixel camera coming with a whopping 35x zoom and optical stabilization. Canon would start shipping the camera in late September at a price tag of $430.
Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Super Zoom Camera Features
SLR Versatility in a Compact Camera
Canon SX40 HS looks like an SLR camera, comes with full manual controls and provides the flexibility of a DSLR. With the excellent zooming range, you can almost replace your tele lenses of 300mm and above. (In theory, the 35x zoom is equivalent to 800mm). Canon uses the most advanced image processor, DIGIC 5 in this camera. Also equipped with a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, PowerShot SX40 can deliver outstanding image quality while shooting wildlife, sporting action, and macro photos of bugs and buds.
If you don’t like to take control over your photography, you can let the camera do it for you. Set it to Smart Auto and the camera will choose from one of the 32 preset scene modes according to the lighting conditions.
Keep the Distant Subjects in Focus
The Zoom Framing Assist button will come to your aid while zooming on to distant, moving objects. The camera tracks the object and keeps it in focus.
Low Light Shooting, Image Stabilization
It also has excellent low light shooting capabilities. It supports ISO up to 3200. Normal photography hardly requires ISO speeds more than 1600. The images are clean, even when shot at very low light conditions. The image quality beats that of other cameras in the same genre when shot under similar conditions.
It comes intelligent image stabilization. The camera will automatically select the stabilization mode from handheld, panning, macro or tripod.
High speed burst lets you take 8 photos in a burst of less than one second.
35x Optical Zoom with Image Stabilization
The mega zoom capability of this camera is the main highlight of this PowerShot from Canon. It brings subjects 35x closer. That is, you can shoot a clear photo of the person standing on the other side of the ground. High zoom is often associated with camera shakes and blurred photos. The intelligent image stabilization built into this camera sees to that. The excellent optical image stabilization feature makes the adjustments to cancel the effects of camera shake.
Record HD Videos
You can record 1080p HD videos at 24 frames per second (fps) with Canon Power Shot SX 40 HS. SX40 HS lets you record one hour of 1080p HD videos.

In addition, there are also provisions to add slow motion effects when shot in VGA or QVGA formats, when shot at 120fps and 240fps respectively. There are also a host of creative filters – like a miniature effect to play with. Yes, it comes with stereo microphones to record the sounds.
Adjustable Display
The display is a 2.7″ LCD screen, which you can swivel on its hinge, providing you even more flexibility in your shooting. That is, you can hold the camera above your head or hold it close to the ground while seeing what you are shooting. Maybe, you can also hold the camera outside the window and shoot photos from any angles you choose.
Canon PowerShot SX40 HS beats several other advanced compact cameras in its genre. At a price of $430, SX40 HS is a bargain.
