Apple has finally unveiled the much-awaited iPhone OS 4. More than 100 new features including 7 new ‘tentpole’ features have been added to this latest version of iPhone OS. You can get a first hand experience of the workability of the new operating system this summer, when it will arrive in the market integrated in a new iPhone model.

Most of the current Apple devices running on the 3rd generation iPhone operating system could be upgraded to include iPhone OS 4. However, the upgraded iPhone 3G will miss several new features including multitasking.

Features of iPhone OS 4

Multi-tasking

Although multi-tasking has become an integral feature of several smartphones, Apple’s products were missing this prominent feature. After waiting for nearly three years, Apple has finally brought multi-tasking to iPhone. This will help you to run several apps simultaneously without draining the battery juice. By double clicking the home button, you can instantly switch between applications.

Folder

The new Folder feature will allow you to organize your documents and apps by grouping them according to categories.

Email app

The Email app will offer a single email box for storing all your email accounts. Moreover, you can set up multiple Exchange accounts. You can speedily switch between inboxes. The new Email feature will even support threaded conversation.

iBooks

For all the bibliophiles, iPhone OS 4 will come with an e-book reader. You can even access iBookstore for downloading ebooks.

Enterprise

The Enterprise feature incorporates advanced data protection, SSL, Exchange Server 2010 support, VPN support for better management of the mobile device.

Game Center

Mimicking Xbox Live of Microsoft, Apple has included a Game Center in its latest iPhone operating system. This social gaming platform allows gamers to invite friends to play online games.

iAd

To encourage developers to release more free applications for iPhone users, the iAd feature has been included in iPhone OS 4. This mobile advertising feature will allow developers to post ads on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The revenue of the ad will be shared between the developer and Apple in the ratio of 60:40.

Other features

Several features that were earlier displayed on jail broken iPhones have been included in the latest iPhone OS. Adding wallpapers on homescreens, 5x digital zoom, Bluetooth keyboards, SMS and MMS search, tap to focus video and more exciting features are part of iPhone OS 4.
