8 HDTV – Facts and Fiction

This summer I decided to purchase a TV for my home. So as is the normal habit with any customer I too started inquiring about the new models and technologies coming up in the market. The Plasma, the LCD and the new talk of the town the High Definition TV’s impressed me all ends because they  possessed some devastating features; I was carried away by their style. But in the end I decided to purchase the latest HDTV (High Definition Television). I was still apprehensive about the purchase as I had heard few confusing things about the gadget. There were several myths floating around.

1) Only Branded cables will work with HDTV’s:

When I investigated, I found out that it was a shear myth as the quality of picture depends upon the type of cable, the cable connector, the length and gauge of the cable and not on the brand of the cable. Hence as a first criteria the cable should be digital cable as they can easily carry a 1080p signal. But if you don’t have a digital connection, even then you can obtain 1080p signal by using component cable. But if you drop down to other cables as composite RCA or S- Video cables obtaining a good signal will be a distant dream.

It’s also advisable to keep the length of cable as short as possible and that too without loops. The loops may pick up interference and can distort the signal quality. Please note the thicker cables can improve the quality if you are forced to run the cable all along the room for more than 50 Ft.

2) Burn-in from on-screen graphics:

It’s again a myth as the burn in is not an issue any more with high definition televisions. It was years ago, when in our old televisions we used to feel the network logo or letterbox bars wear unevenly on our televisions. But in LCD’s, Plasma’s this problem is resolved by incorporating the counter effective measures. In LCD’s its not a problem any more, while in plasma TV’s the static image may look like a burn in issue, but it fades away with in no time. However, still the process can be speeded up by activating the inbuilt mode to clear the problem or by switching to a channel having static pattern.
